Chittagong Metropolitan Branch of the Police Women Welfare Association (Punak), made up of wives of police officers, has announced the sale of onions to the public at affordable prices.
On Saturday, onion will be sold at a rate of Tk 5 a kg in each of the five police stations, said general secretary of the organization, Shuli Bhowmik.
He said that the decision was made to sell onion at affordable prices to the people at weekly meetings chaired by the organization’s president Mirza Mahbub Mostafa.
Police officials of Kotwali, Pahartali, Khulshi, Chandgaon and EPZ police said the operation of selling these onions in the truck would start for one week initially.
Chittagong City Police Commissioner is the wife of the post of the president of Chittagong City Punak and the wife of the Deputy Commissioner (Sadar) general secretary.
Asked about this, CMP DC (Sadar) Shyamul Kumar Nath said that the onion of importers from Chittagong Punak’s own fund would be sold to the public for free.
Onion prices in Bangladesh continued to rise in late September due to rising prices of onions in India and subsequently stopping exports.
For more than two months onion prices have been in volatility in the country. Consumers onion cost more than 20 rupees per kg.
The government has started importing enough onion in the sky and sea to pull the onion prices down. The government has also taken steps to sell onions through TCB to ensure fair prices.
